SCOTLAND 42 - 17 JAPAN

Murrayfield - Saturday 09 November 2013
KO: 14:30 HT: 11-3 Att: 32,680
HOW IT HAPPENED MINUTE BY MINUTE...
6’ PEN (Laidlaw)! Direct, physical play from the Scots earns their way into the Japan 22. The hosts are awarded a penalty from a re-set scrum, which Edinburgh Rugby captain Greig Laidlaw duly strikes between the posts to open the scoring (3-0).
14’ BIG hit from lock Tim Swinson to halt an extended period of Japanese pressure deep in the Scotland 22.
The visitors knock on but then win a scrum against the head, before being turned over in the danger area, and allowing Scotland to finally clear (3-0).
17’ MISS PEN (Laidlaw)! The scrum-half’s penalty attempt comes off the post (3-0).
21’ PEN (Laidlaw)! After a bit of an arm wrestle, the Scots earn territory and then a kickable penalty, which the little general struck soundly through the posts, making 199 points for his country (6-0).
24’ The Japanese pay a heavy price for kicking for touch instead of the posts as their kick for the 5m line goes out in the dead ball area. a big let off for the hosts who win a penalty from the resulting scrum (6-0).
29’ The men in red look to exploit an overlap as Scotland prop Ryan Grant goes down injured. Good scramble defence shuts down the rushing attack as it reaches the 22 (6-0).
28’ SUB (Alasdair Dickinson on for Grant).
32’ TRY (Seymour)! A classy finish from the winger who crosses out wide for his first try in three Tests for his country, after some hard yards from Alasdair Dickinson and David Denton in the middle (11-0).
32’ MISS CON (Laidlaw) – The scrum-half misses the opportunity to extend the lead from the touchline (11-0).
34’ Japan unrelenting in their efforts to cross the whitewash, race into Scotland’s 22 once again. Winger Kenki Fukuoka is brought down on the 5m line before the referee pulled play back for an earlier infringement.
35’ PEN (Ayumu Goromaru)! The full-back bisects the posts with a clean penalty kick from inside the 22 (11-3).
38’ NO TRY! The TMO chalks off Sean Lamont’s try after a fine break from centre Nick De Luca. Swinson pinged for obstruction (11-3).
Scotland 11-3 Japan HT T: Seymour P: Laidlaw (2) | P: Goromaru
42’ TRY (Fukuoka)! Impressive stuff from the winger who burst up field from the 22 after a quick tap free-kick. He was tackled on the half-way line but was back up on his feet and around to re-join the back line and sprint around and under the posts (11-8).
43’ CON (Goromaru)! The full-back added the extras from the straight on pen (11-10).
46’ TRY (Laidlaw)! Great reaction from Scotland who re-take possession from the kick-off and batter up field. After several pick and goes from the big men, it was Laidlaw who sniped through at the side of the ruck to pass the 200-point mark in the blue of Scotland (16-10).
47’ CON (Laidlaw)! Laidlaw adds the extras (18-10).
51’ TRY (Fukuoka)! The winger crosses for his second try of the match after stand-off Kosei Ono broke through (18-15).
52’ CON (Goromaru)! A marksman-like conversion from the full-back keeps his nation a point adrift (18-17).
54’ TRY (Seymour)! A second try from the winger who was in acres of space to receive a big miss pass floated over the top from Warriors teammate Ruaridh Jackson, with only the paint between him and the five points (23-17).
55’ MISS CON (Laidlaw).
57’ SUB (Lock Richie Gray on for Kellock).
60’ Fine, clean break from captain Kelly Brown from the 22 is halted on the 5m line with the chance at quick ball disrupted illegally. Japan number 8 Koliniashi Holani sent to the sin bin.
63’ TRY (Dickinson)! After an overlap had gone wanting, Japan scrambled and cleared. The Scots ran the ball back with a vengeance.
Centres Matt Scott and Nick De Luca combine to make big yards upfield before a quick series between Laidlaw, Brown, Ford and Jackson finds Dickinson who ran in under the posts for his second score in 28 caps (28-17).
64’ CON (Laidlaw)! The scrum-half made no mistake with the straight on conversion (30-17)
65’ SUB (stand-off Duncan Weir on for Jackson).
68’ TRY (Weir)! Four minutes after coming off the bench Weir was there to score after Sean Maitland made it to the 5m line and offered the inside ball (35-17).
69’ MISS CON (Laidlaw) (35-17)
70’ SUB (Back-row John Barclay on for Strokosch; hooker Pat MacArthur on for Ford).
73’ SUB (Prop Geoff Cross on for Murray; Henry Pyrgos on for Laidlaw).
75’ SUB (Duncan Taylor on for Maitland).
77’ TRY (Lamont)! Lamont wins the foot race to a ball box kicked over top thanks to the good vision of replacement scrum-half Pyrgos (40-17).
78’ CON (Weir)! The replacement stand-off converts (42-17).

ITALY 20 - 50 AUSTRALIA

Stadio Olimpico di Torino, Turin - Saturday 09 November 2013
KO: 15:00 HT: 10-19 Att: tbc
THE Qantas Wallabies bounced back from a disappointing loss to England with a commanding 50-20, seven tries to three, victory against Italy in Turin.
Matt Toomua kicked off in a sunny eighteen degrees at Stadio Olimpico, but it was fly half Alberto Di Bernardo’s kick that gave Italy the lead after just 4 minutes when Australia were penalised for slowing the ball down at the ruck.
Wallabies fly half Quade Cooper had a chance to level the scores when Tommaso Benvenuti was penalised for going off his feet at a ruck shortly after, but his attempt went wide.
Italy went further ahead on 12 minutes after they launched an ambitious attack just outside their own 22. Benvenuti got into the clear down the right-hand touchline before throwing an inside pass to centre Luca Morisi. Morisi offloaded to the Townsville-born Italian fullback, Luke Mclean who scored the game's opening try in his 50th Test.
Di Bernardo landed the conversion and the Wallabies were staring down the barrel at 10-0 down. But, as it has so often this year, it was a moment of Israel Folau brilliance that brought Australia back into the match.
On 15 minutes the Wallabies had a good spell of possession and managed to up the tempo. Quick hands saw the ball come wide to Folau who cut through the Azzurri defence to be pulled down just metres from Italy’s line.
The Wallabies recycled quickly and showed good composure as they worked the ball across field through multiple phases until a perfectly timed pass from Cooper put captain, Ben Mowen into a gap. The Brumbies No.8 was pulled down short but was able to reach out and plant the ball down for his first Test try. Cooper converted and Australia were back to 10-7.
Six minutes later Folau once again added spark to the Wallabies game. A long pass from Toomua found Folau out wide where he broke through the defence before delivering a superb offload to winger Nick Cummins. Cummins sprinted 50 metres down the left hand touchline and was tackled just short but managed to get a low pass away which was scooped up by young Brumbies centre, Tevita Kuridrani to go over for his second Test try. Cooper converted from out wide and suddenly the Wallabies had a 14 -10 lead after 21 minutes.
Italy were finding it hard to hold back the gold tide as Australia added more points to the board on 31 minutes. A strong burst from Michael Hooper gave the Wallabies some momentum as the ball was brought into the Italian 22. Will Genia went to the short side finding Cummins with a sharp pass .The “Honey Badger” skirted around McLean to score wide out, handing the Wallabies a 19-10 lead as the clock neared half time.
Rob Simmons was then penalised for obstructing Parisse who was chasing a high kick, but Di Bernardo missed the penalty attempt. Di Bernardo then missed another attempt shortly afterwards when Mowen was penalised for coming in at the side of a ruck, leaving the score at 19-10 to the Wallabies at half time.
Italy had a good spell of possession early in the second half, but strong defence from the Wallabies held them at bay before Hooper won a relieving penalty at the breakdown.
The Wallabies then went further ahead on 51 minutes with Cooper drawing three defenders to put Cummins in for his second try of the match. Cooper converted successfully to put Australia in command at 26-10.
Cooper was again the creator on 58 minutes. As Kuridrani ran a good decoy run, the Wallabies vice-captain found winger Adam Ashley-Cooper who took the perfect line to score under the posts. Cooper landed his fourth conversion to make it 33-10.
Italy were the next to score with reserve prop Lorenzo Cittadini forcing his way over from close range to make it 33-15 on 62 minutes. Reserve fly half Tommaso (Tommy) Allan missed the conversion leaving the Wallabies with an 18 point lead.
Christian Leali’ifano, who was sent on for Cooper, then landed a long range penalty on 65 minutes to take the Wallabies lead to 36-15.
Brumbies winger Joe Tomane replaced Ashley-Cooper and, picking up where he left off in Rosario, immediately sprinted away for a long range score straight from the restart thanks to a superb flick pass from hooker Stephen Moore. Leali’ifano was accurate from the right touchline and Australia were up 43-15.
Tomane then set up a try for Folau minutes later, plucking a cross field kick from Toomua out of the air and popping it in field to the Wallabies fullback who went over for his eight Test try, and the Wallabies seventh of the match. Leali’ifano again converted from the touchline and Australia were cruising at 50-15 up.
Italy bombarded the line in the final minutes and though the Wallabies held firm through some desperate defence, Allan managed to step through for his first Test try. Allan’s missed conversion set the final score at 50-20.
